Space Agriculture

ishikurage_gen.jpgMicroalgae produce oxygen, bio-energy and lots of nutrients. We will be able to utilize microalgae for space exploration in near future.
We study the possibility of the terrestrial blue-green alga Nostoc commune (Ishikurage) as the biological soil crusts for space agriculture.

Microalgae cosmos

ISS.jpg The 10-d flight of 4 microalgae cosmos (Dunaliella salina, Dunaliella tertiolecta, Plerurochrysis carterae and Nostoc commune) onboard the Russian Service Module in the International Space Station (ISS) occurred between March 31 and April 9, 2006.
D. tertiolecta cosmos accumulated glutathione to a level 2-fold higher than that of an earth-bound D. tertiolecta control.
